IB DP Geography HL

Geography HL is the Higher Level course for Geography. It covers people, places, power and change, supported by fieldwork and geographic skills.

Higher Level (HL) courses are designed for students with a strong interest or a plan to study the subject further. They typically involve about 240 teaching hours and cover more content, in greater depth, than Standard Level.

What students will do

  • Apply concepts to real places
  • Interpret maps and data
  • Evaluate geographic issues

Internal assessment

Students complete a fieldwork-based investigation, which contributes to the final grade alongside the external exams.

Revision tip

Build a simple timeline or concept map for each unit. Seeing the whole picture on one page makes revision much faster.

Should I choose SL or SL?

Choose HL for subjects you enjoy most or may study at university, and SL for the rest. Your teacher or DP coordinator can advise on the right balance.
