IB DP History HL
History HL is the Higher Level course for History. It covers world history topics, prescribed subjects and in-depth historical investigation using sources.
Higher Level (HL) courses are designed for students with a strong interest or a plan to study the subject further. They typically involve about 240 teaching hours and cover more content, in greater depth, than Standard Level.
What students will do
- Evaluate sources for value and limitation
- Analyse causes, effects and change
- Write balanced, evidence-based essays
Internal assessment
Students complete a historical investigation, which contributes to the final grade alongside the external exams.
Build a simple timeline or concept map for each unit. Seeing the whole picture on one page makes revision much faster.
Should I choose SL or SL?
Choose HL for subjects you enjoy most or may study at university, and SL for the rest. Your teacher or DP coordinator can advise on the right balance.
