IB DP Chemistry HL
Chemistry HL is the Higher Level course for Chemistry. It covers atomic structure, bonding, energetics, kinetics, equilibrium and organic chemistry, with practical work.
Higher Level (HL) courses are designed for students with a strong interest or a plan to study the subject further. They typically involve about 240 teaching hours and cover more content, in greater depth, than Standard Level.
What students will do
- Apply quantitative methods
- Explain structure and reactivity
- Design and evaluate experiments
Internal assessment
Students complete an independent scientific investigation, which contributes to the final grade alongside the external exams.
Read each question for the command word (describe, explain, compare) before you start. It tells you how much detail is expected.
Should I choose SL or SL?
Choose HL for subjects you enjoy most or may study at university, and SL for the rest. Your teacher or DP coordinator can advise on the right balance.
