IB DP English A: Literature HL
English A: Literature HL is the Higher Level course for English A: Literature. It covers the close study of literary works from different periods, places and forms.
Higher Level (HL) courses are designed for students with a strong interest or a plan to study the subject further. They typically involve about 240 teaching hours and cover more content, in greater depth, than Standard Level.
What students will do
- Read closely and critically
- Write detailed literary analysis
- Discuss texts with confidence
Internal assessment
Students complete an individual oral, which contributes to the final grade alongside the external exams.
Read a little every day and talk about what you read. Retelling a story or an argument in your own words builds comprehension and vocabulary.
Should I choose SL or SL?
Choose HL for subjects you enjoy most or may study at university, and SL for the rest. Your teacher or DP coordinator can advise on the right balance.
