Digraph CH Words in IB PYP Grade 1 Language
In ch words the letters c and h stand side by side and say /ch/, like a little train going "ch-ch-ch". Children meet it at the start of words (chair, cheese, chick, chip) and at the end (lunch, beach, peach, much). It is often practised next to sh so learners can tell the two sounds apart.
Every worksheet here is short, colourful and playful, with a friendly animal guide and a teacher answer key on page 2. Matching flashcards can be played online or printed 1, 2, 4, 6 or 8 to an A4 page.
What learners practise
- Hear the ch sound at the start and end of words
- Read and spell ch words such as chair, cheese, lunch and beach
- Tell ch words from sh words
- Complete sentences with ch words
For students
Say each word aloud, then write it. Colour the animal when you finish.
For parents
Print on A4, read the instructions together and let your child try before you check.
For teachers
Use as a phonics starter, homework or exit ticket. Each sheet has a name, class and date box and an answer key.
Pretend to be a train going "ch-ch-ch". Compare it with a quiet "shhh" so children feel the difference in their mouths.
Quick answers
How is ch different from sh?
Ch is a short, chopped sound as in chip, made with a quick burst of air. Sh is a long, soft sound as in ship.
Where can ch appear in a word?
At the start (chair), in the middle (teacher) or at the end (lunch). Grade 1 worksheets focus on the start and the end.
How should I use these worksheets?
Pick one worksheet, let your child try it alone first, then check together with the answer key on page 2. Five to ten minutes a few times a week works best.
