Number Names in IB PYP Grade 1 Mathematics
A number name is the word we say and write for a number: 7 is “seven”, 12 is “twelve” and 40 is “forty”. This page collects worksheets and interactive tools that help Grade 1 learners (ages 6–7) connect numerals, spoken words and spelling, a key step in the Number strand of the PYP mathematics programme.
PYP learning is inquiry-based, so the activities here are short, colourful and playful. Children match, trace, spell and say number words rather than memorising lists.
What learners practise
- Reading a numeral and saying its number word aloud
- Writing number names from one to twenty correctly
- Spelling the tens: twenty, thirty, forty, fifty and up to one hundred
- Matching numerals, number names and pictures of quantities
- Spotting patterns, such as the “-teen” and “-ty” endings
Number names at a glance
- 1–10: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten
- 11–19: eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen
- Tens: twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty, ninety, one hundred
- In between: say the tens word, then the ones word, for example twenty-three or sixty-eight
For students
Say each number out loud before you write it. Sound it out slowly, then check your spelling against the word list.
For parents
Point out number words at home: on clocks, signs, books and recipes. Ask your child to write today’s date in words.
For teachers
Use a worksheet as a starter or exit ticket, then follow with an interactive tool to give instant feedback and differentiate.
Watch the tricky pairs: four and forty (no “u” in forty), five and fifteen (the “v” becomes “f”), and eight and eighteen (only one “t” is added).
Quick answers
Who is the Number Names page for?
It is for IB PYP Grade 1 Mathematics learners, typically aged 6–7, and for the parents and teachers who support them.
What numbers do the worksheets cover?
Most start with one to twenty and then move on to the tens and numbers up to one hundred, so children build confidence step by step.
Are the number names resources free?
Many are. Each resource shows a clear Free or price label, so you can start with the free ones and add more when you need extra practice.
How should I use these resources?
Pick one worksheet, let your child try it without help first, then check together with the answer key. Short sessions of five to ten minutes, a few times a week, work best.
