Number Words in IB PYP Grade 1 Mathematics
Number words are how we write numbers with letters: one, two, three. Grade 1 learners learn to read the words, match them to numerals and then write them with a word bank to help with spelling.
PYP learning is inquiry-based, so every worksheet here is short, colourful and playful, with a friendly animal guide and a teacher answer key on page 2.
What learners practise
- Writing number words with a word bank
- Reading number words as numerals
- Matching numerals to words
- Spelling the teen number words
Number words at a glance
- 0 to 10: zero, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten
- Teens: eleven, twelve, thirteen ... nineteen

For students
Read each instruction carefully, try every question and colour the animal when you finish.
For parents
Print on A4, read the instructions aloud together and let your child work alone before you check.
For teachers
Use a worksheet as a starter, homework or exit ticket. Each one has a name, class and date box and an answer key.
Say the word, trace it with a finger, then cover it and write it. Little and often beats one long spelling session.
Quick answers
Who is the Number Words page for?
It is for IB PYP Grade 1 Mathematics learners, typically aged 6–7, and for the parents and teachers who support them.
Do children need to spell number words in Grade 1?
Reading them matters most. Spelling comes with practice, so the worksheets give a word bank first and then fade it out.
Which number words are hardest?
Eight, twelve and fifteen have spellings that do not follow the sound, so give them extra practice.
How should I use these worksheets?
Pick one worksheet, let your child try it without help first, then check together with the answer key on page 2. Short sessions of five to ten minutes, a few times a week, work best.
