Number Line in IB PYP Grade 1 Mathematics
A number line is a straight line with numbers in order. In PYP Grade 1, learners read numbers from a line, fill in missing numbers and use it to see which numbers come before, after and between.
PYP learning is inquiry-based, so every worksheet here is short, colourful and playful, with a friendly animal guide and a teacher answer key on page 2.
What learners practise
- Completing a number line
- Reading the number an arrow points to
- Using a number line to order numbers
- Finding numbers before, after and between
Number lines at a glance
- Left to right: numbers get bigger
- Equal spaces: every step is one more
- Arrow: shows which number to read
- Boxes: show the missing numbers to write
For students
Read each instruction carefully, try every question and colour the animal when you finish.
For parents
Print on A4, read the instructions aloud together and let your child work alone before you check.
For teachers
Use a worksheet as a starter, homework or exit ticket. Each one has a name, class and date box and an answer key.
Draw a big number line on the floor with chalk or tape and let children hop along it. Moving the body makes the order of numbers stick.
Quick answers
Who is the Number Line page for?
It is for IB PYP Grade 1 Mathematics learners, typically aged 6–7, and for the parents and teachers who support them.
Which number lines do the worksheets use?
Lines from 0 to 10 and from 0 to 20, so children grow from small to bigger numbers.
How does a number line help with adding later?
Children who can hop along a line find it much easier to count on when they start adding.
How should I use these worksheets?
Pick one worksheet, let your child try it without help first, then check together with the answer key on page 2. Short sessions of five to ten minutes, a few times a week, work best.
