IB DP Economics HL

Economics HL is the Higher Level course for Economics. It covers microeconomics, macroeconomics and the global economy, with real-world case study.

Higher Level (HL) courses are designed for students with a strong interest or a plan to study the subject further. They typically involve about 240 teaching hours and cover more content, in greater depth, than Standard Level.

What students will do

  • Apply economic theory with diagrams
  • Evaluate policies and trade-offs
  • Write structured, analytical responses

Internal assessment

Students complete a portfolio of commentaries on real-world news, which contributes to the final grade alongside the external exams.

Revision tip

Always ask "why does this matter?" Linking facts to causes, consequences and perspectives is what lifts a good answer into a great one.

Should I choose SL or SL?

Choose HL for subjects you enjoy most or may study at university, and SL for the rest. Your teacher or DP coordinator can advise on the right balance.
