IB DP Psychology HL

Psychology HL is the Higher Level course for Psychology. It covers biological, cognitive and sociocultural approaches to understanding behaviour, supported by empirical research.

Higher Level (HL) courses are designed for students with a strong interest or a plan to study the subject further. They typically involve about 240 teaching hours and cover more content, in greater depth, than Standard Level.

What students will do

  • Describe and evaluate key studies
  • Understand research methods
  • Write structured, evidence-based responses

Internal assessment

Students complete a simple experimental study, which contributes to the final grade alongside the external exams.

Revision tip

Always ask "why does this matter?" Linking facts to causes, consequences and perspectives is what lifts a good answer into a great one.

Should I choose SL or SL?

Choose HL for subjects you enjoy most or may study at university, and SL for the rest. Your teacher or DP coordinator can advise on the right balance.
