IB DP Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL is the Higher Level course for Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches. It covers algebra, functions, geometry and trigonometry, calculus, and statistics and probability, with an emphasis on proof and abstract reasoning.

Higher Level (HL) courses are designed for students with a strong interest or a plan to study the subject further. They typically involve about 240 teaching hours and cover more content, in greater depth, than Standard Level.

What students will do

  • Develop fluent algebraic and calculus technique
  • Construct clear mathematical arguments
  • Solve unfamiliar problems

Internal assessment

Students complete a mathematical exploration, which contributes to the final grade alongside the external exams.

Revision tip

Little and often beats cramming: ten focused questions a day will build more fluency than one long session at the weekend.

Should I choose SL or SL?

Choose HL for subjects you enjoy most or may study at university, and SL for the rest. Your teacher or DP coordinator can advise on the right balance.
