IB DP Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation SL

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation SL is the Standard Level course for Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation. It covers number, algebra, functions, geometry, statistics and calculus, with an emphasis on modelling and technology.

Standard Level (SL) courses cover the essential content and skills in roughly 150 teaching hours, giving a solid foundation without the added depth and breadth of Higher Level.

What students will do

  • Model real situations mathematically
  • Use technology effectively
  • Interpret and communicate results

Internal assessment

Students complete a mathematical exploration, which contributes to the final grade alongside the external exams.

Revision tip

Show every step of your working, then check each answer by estimating first. Examiners reward clear reasoning as much as correct answers.

Should I choose HL or HL?

Choose HL for subjects you enjoy most or may study at university, and SL for the rest. Your teacher or DP coordinator can advise on the right balance.
