IB DP Environmental Systems and Societies HL

Environmental Systems and Societies HL is the Higher Level course for Environmental Systems and Societies. It covers how environmental systems function and how societies value and manage the natural world.

Higher Level (HL) courses are designed for students with a strong interest or a plan to study the subject further. They typically involve about 240 teaching hours and cover more content, in greater depth, than Standard Level.

What students will do

  • Analyse systems and data
  • Evaluate environmental issues
  • Connect science with societal choices

Internal assessment

Students complete an independent investigation, which contributes to the final grade alongside the external exams.

Revision tip

Sketch a quick diagram or flow chart for every process you study. Visual summaries are far easier to revise from than paragraphs.

Should I choose SL or SL?

Choose HL for subjects you enjoy most or may study at university, and SL for the rest. Your teacher or DP coordinator can advise on the right balance.
