IB DP Environmental Systems and Societies SL

Environmental Systems and Societies SL is the Standard Level course for Environmental Systems and Societies. It covers how environmental systems function and how societies value and manage the natural world.

Standard Level (SL) courses cover the essential content and skills in roughly 150 teaching hours, giving a solid foundation without the added depth and breadth of Higher Level.

What students will do

  • Analyse systems and data
  • Evaluate environmental issues
  • Connect science with societal choices

Internal assessment

Students complete an independent investigation, which contributes to the final grade alongside the external exams.

Revision tip

Sketch a quick diagram or flow chart for every process you study. Visual summaries are far easier to revise from than paragraphs.

Should I choose HL or HL?

Choose HL for subjects you enjoy most or may study at university, and SL for the rest. Your teacher or DP coordinator can advise on the right balance.
