Measures of Central Tendency in IB MYP Grade 4 Mathematics

In IB MYP Grade 4 Mathematics, Measures of Central Tendency, within Statistics and Probability gives advancing learners (ages 14–15) the chance to practise comparing mean, median and mode, analysing spread alongside central tendency and using central tendency to compare data sets critically.

MYP Mathematics is assessed against four criteria (A: knowing and understanding, B: investigating patterns, C: communicating and D: applying mathematics in real-world contexts). Regular practice with measures of central tendency builds the knowledge and skills those criteria reward.

What learners practise

  • Comparing mean, median and mode
  • Analysing spread alongside central tendency
  • Using central tendency to compare data sets critically

For students

Work through the worksheets, practice questions and revision resources at your own pace. Check your answers, then redo anything that felt tricky and explain each answer in your own words.

For revision

Use these resources for homework, end-of-unit revision and catching up on anything missed in class.

For teachers

Use measures of central tendency activities as a starter, homework or retrieval practice, and mix free and premium resources to differentiate.

Study tip

Show every step of your working, then check each answer by estimating first. Examiners reward clear reasoning as much as correct answers.
