Bar Charts in IB PYP Grade 1 Mathematics

A bar chart uses bars to show how big each number is. Grade 1 learners read simple bar charts, colour bars to match a table, and answer questions about the most, the least and how many more.

PYP learning is inquiry-based, so every worksheet here is short, colourful and playful, with a friendly animal guide and a teacher answer key on page 2.

What learners practise

  • Reading a bar chart
  • Colouring bars to match numbers
  • Finding the tallest and shortest bar
  • Finding how many more
  • Turning a tally into a bar chart

Bar charts at a glance

  • Bars: each bar shows one group
  • Height: read across to the number on the side
  • Tallest bar = the most
  • Shortest bar = the least

For students

Read each instruction carefully, try every question and colour the animal when you finish.

For parents

Print on A4, read the instructions aloud together and let your child work alone before you check.

For teachers

Use a worksheet as a starter, homework or exit ticket. Each one has a name, class and date box and an answer key.

Teaching tip

Place a ruler flat across the top of each bar to read its number on the side scale.
