Shopping and Change in IB PYP Grade 1 Mathematics

Shopping brings money to life. Grade 1 learners add the prices of two items, decide which costs more or less, work out what they can buy with a budget and find change from a payment.

PYP learning is inquiry-based, so every worksheet here is short, colourful and playful, with a friendly animal guide and a teacher answer key on page 2.

What learners practise

  • Adding two prices
  • Comparing which costs more or less
  • Deciding what you can afford
  • Finding change from ₹5, ₹10 or ₹20
  • Solving simple shopping stories

Shopping at a glance

  • Cost: the price you pay
  • Altogether: add the prices
  • Afford: have enough money
  • Change: money paid minus the cost

For students

Read each instruction carefully, try every question and colour the animal when you finish.

For parents

Print on A4, read the instructions aloud together and let your child work alone before you check.

For teachers

Use a worksheet as a starter, homework or exit ticket. Each one has a name, class and date box and an answer key.

Teaching tip

Play shop at home. Put price tags on toys and let children be the shopkeeper and the customer.
