IB DP Computer Science HL

Computer Science HL is the Higher Level course for Computer Science. It covers computational thinking, programming, systems and data, taught through problem solving.

Higher Level (HL) courses are designed for students with a strong interest or a plan to study the subject further. They typically involve about 240 teaching hours and cover more content, in greater depth, than Standard Level.

What students will do

  • Design algorithms
  • Write and test programs
  • Explain how computer systems work

Internal assessment

Students complete a computational solution to a real problem, which contributes to the final grade alongside the external exams.

Revision tip

Link every fact to an everyday example. Ideas you can connect to real life are much easier to remember and apply.

Should I choose SL or SL?

Choose HL for subjects you enjoy most or may study at university, and SL for the rest. Your teacher or DP coordinator can advise on the right balance.
