Length in IB PYP Grade 1 Mathematics

Length tells us how long, short or tall something is. Grade 1 learners compare two objects directly, order three or more, measure with cubes and then read a simple centimetre ruler.

PYP learning is inquiry-based, so every worksheet here is short, colourful and playful, with a friendly animal guide and a teacher answer key on page 2.

What learners practise

  • Comparing which is longer, shorter or taller
  • Ordering objects by length
  • Measuring with cubes
  • Reading a ruler in centimetres
  • Choosing the right tool to measure

Length at a glance

  • Taller / shorter for height, longer for length
  • Order: shortest, then longer, then longest
  • Cubes: line them up end to end with no gaps
  • Ruler: start at 0 and read the number at the end

For students

Read each instruction carefully, try every question and colour the animal when you finish.

For parents

Print on A4, read the instructions aloud together and let your child work alone before you check.

For teachers

Use a worksheet as a starter, homework or exit ticket. Each one has a name, class and date box and an answer key.

Teaching tip

Always start measuring from the same line. Start at 0 on the ruler and the first cube’s edge on the object’s end.

Quick answers

How do children measure length without a ruler?

They line up cubes, paper clips or hand spans end to end and count them.

What is the difference between long and tall?

We use tall for height (up) and long for length (across).

How should I use these worksheets?

Pick one worksheet, let your child try it without help first, then check together with the answer key on page 2. Short sessions of five to ten minutes, a few times a week, work best.
