Design Cycle in IB MYP Grade 1 Product Design

Design Cycle is part of IB MYP Grade 1 Product Design. At this foundational stage (ages 11–12), learners work on exploring simple making and creating and identifying a simple design problem.

MYP Product Design is assessed against four criteria (A: inquiring and analysing, B: developing ideas, C: creating the solution and D: evaluating). Regular practice with design cycle builds the knowledge and skills those criteria reward.

What learners practise

  • Exploring simple making and creating
  • Identifying a simple design problem

For students

Work through the worksheets, practice questions and revision resources at your own pace. Check your answers, then redo anything that felt tricky and explain each answer in your own words.

For revision

Use these resources for homework, end-of-unit revision and catching up on anything missed in class.

For teachers

Use design cycle activities as a starter, homework or retrieval practice, and mix free and premium resources to differentiate.

Study tip

Test early and test often. A quick prototype that fails teaches you more than a polished idea that was never tried.
